Hen party group mid-routine at their Fame dance class in Southampton
The eighties dance-school one

Fame Hen Party Dance Class SouthamptonFame costs. Rather less than the film implies, though.

Legwarmers, a mirrored studio and a room full of people who believe they are about to be discovered — the eighties dance-school fantasy is a very easy sell on a hen weekend, largely because everyone gets to be the lead. Your teacher builds the routine live for the group in front of them, all big arms and unapologetic energy, in a room we hire near Southampton Central or on Bedford Place, or at the house the weekend has taken over. Ninety minutes is £185, sixty is £160, and beyond the venue’s hire cost there is nothing else to settle. No dance experience is required; conviction covers most of the gap.

The good dates disappear quietly.

Let us know the date, how many of you there are and where you are based for the weekend. Within the day you will hear whether it is open, what the rooms cost to hire and answers to the rest of it. An undecided theme is no problem — the date is the thing worth grabbing.

Why it still lands

The theme where everybody is the lead.

Most film themes give you one star and a chorus. This one gives you a whole class of people convinced they are the star, which is a much better fit for a room where the bride is meant to be the centre of attention and eighteen other people are competing for the camera anyway. The music is generous — big, unsubtle, impossible to be embarrassed by — and the choreography rewards commitment over technique, which is exactly the right bargain for a hen party dance class. A Fame dance hen party is loud, sweaty and extremely well suited to phone footage, and among hen party ideas for a group who want to be out of breath, it is comfortably the least self-conscious.

(i)

Everyone gets a moment. The one hen do dance class where showing off is the actual instruction rather than something to be forgiven.

(ii)

Legwarmers are yours. Off-the-shoulder sweatshirts, leotards, headbands — all of it is the group’s own doing. Everything thematic in the room arrived in somebody else’s bag, not in ours.

(iii)

Effort beats training. The style is built on attack rather than precision, so conviction gets you most of the way and nobody looks out of place.

a

Register and warm up

Bags down, a quick hello and a warm-up that is more eighties aerobics than ballet class. The nerves rarely survive it.

b

Big arms, big steps

Kicks, jumps and reaches drilled at half speed until they look intentional, then put back up to tempo.

c

The routine is invented

Composed on the day for the people in the room — your teacher picks the material to fit the ages, the shoes and the ceiling height.

d

Perform it properly

A full run at full volume with a phone at the front, and the finish held for considerably longer than necessary.

the number is invented for the room it is danced in, then never used again for anybody else.

Ninety minutes£185+ the venue’s hire cost

The length this theme deserves: time to learn the material and then genuinely perform it twice over.

One hour£160+ the venue’s hire cost

A condensed audition — fewer counts, same energy, still filmed at the end.

one fee for the whole cast, since a hen party activity billed by the head would make a poor opening number.

The studio

Two hired rooms, five minutes apart.

We hire both of these by the hour rather than running them, and we choose whichever suits your numbers, your footwear and the rest of your plans. The hire cost is quoted in writing with the date, so the whole figure is on the table before anybody commits.

Fame, before you book.

seven questions we get by email most weeks ↓

Do we need legwarmers and eighties dance kit?+

Not unless the group wants them. Nothing comes with us beyond the teacher and the music, so headbands, legwarmers, leotards and off-the-shoulder sweatshirts are yours to organise if you fancy the photos. A fair number of parties turn up in ordinary gym kit and the class runs exactly the same, which is worth knowing if half the group is arriving straight off a train.

Is this harder than the other hen dance themes?+

It is more energetic rather than more technical. The steps are big and repetitive, the counts are obvious and the teacher builds it at whatever speed the room can take, but you will be warmer at the end than you would be after a slow jazz theme. Anyone who would rather not jump can be given a version that does not involve jumping.

Are there extras on top of the class fee?+

There is the class fee — £185 for ninety minutes, £160 for the hour — and the venue’s hire cost. Nothing else. The fee covers everyone in the party rather than being worked out person by person, so late additions to the group do not change it, and at your own hen house there is no room cost to add at all.

Can people watch rather than take part?+

They can, though hardly anybody does once the music is on. There is usually somewhere to sit at both rooms, and someone filming from the side is genuinely useful. Nobody is dragged into the middle, and the teacher will not single anybody out who has asked to be left alone.

Where would the class be held in Southampton?+

One of two rooms we hire: one near Southampton Central for anyone travelling in, one on Bedford Place for parties who are staying out afterwards. Both sit within a short walk of Westquay, the Bargate and somewhere decent to eat. If your whole weekend is in the New Forest we will bring the class out to you instead.

Which songs does the routine use?+

Whatever your teacher decides suits the room on the day. The eighties dance-school catalogue is wide and the obvious title track is only one option in it, so we do not pin a setlist down in advance. Nobody minds being asked on the day, and it often changes what gets picked.

Can we swap to a different theme later on?+

Yes, free, up until about a week before. Your booking holds the date and the teacher rather than the theme, so Fame can become any of the other themes among the 39 with no change to what you pay. Just tell us when the group chat reaches a verdict.
